Pizza + Bus = LOVE

6.2.14

When my friend and desk buddy Harriet said she was going to eat pizza on a bus, I had to ask her to repeat what she said. I mean, pizza! On a bus! How brilliant is that?

She said it was pretty amazing so I thought it was only fair that she shared the pizza bus love.

Here’s Harriet…..

Harriet AKA giddy schoolgirl

All aboard!

You know that unsettling feeling you get when you step onto a non-moving escalator? And no matter how many times you tell yourself: ‘It’s okay, body, just treat them like a normal, stationary flight of stairs,’ you still come over all dizzy and weird?

I experienced a similar sensation when I first sat down for dinner on the Big Red Pizza Bus, a restaurant in Southeast London. As the name would suggest, the venue is a real, beautiful bus. I expected the double-decker to move – because that’s what buses do – but not this one. It stayed put. And thankfully that disorientating feeling lasted all but a few seconds…

Step aboard (no Oyster card needed) and take a seat on the lower or upper deck of this retired – but loved – transporter.

Put your Oyster card away!

The diner-style, candle-lit tables and original, checked bus seats sit four comfortably. There’s a few longer pews (no table) right at the back of the lower deck, too, where you might enjoy a few cocktails and, I assume, hang out with the cool kids!

The artisan pizzas are big and delicious (£6.95+) with generous toppings sourced from Borough Market. The menu also offers handmade Italian egg pasta and salads; though the chicken Caesar salad, in comparison to the pizzas, was disappointing.

Ooh, conductor, you're spoiling us

The novelty of eating on a GODDAM BUS didn’t wane throughout my 90-minute sitting and, by the end, I felt like a giddy schoolgirl (compounded when I rode the DLR home, sitting at the VERY front).

Unsurprisingly, therefore, Big Red is incredibly popular with children and, for this reason, the waiter advised me to book if I visited on a weekend.

I’m certain, though, to avoid disappointment, bookings will soon be mandatory midweek too as this quirky eatery seriously takes off. Not literally, of course! That would make for messy pizza consumption – like eating your dinner on a moving escalator…

The Lauriston pub - possibly the best pizza in east London...

21.8.13

I've eaten so much pizza this month, I may turn into a pizza (this is not a bad thing, especially as all the pizza I've eaten this month has been pretty amazing.)

After the sad discovery that my fave local pizza place Fire & Stone in Spitafields had closed down, I needed to find somewhere else ASAP. The Lauriston Pub on Victoria Park Road in Hackney, more than filled the void.

I went there one Tuesday night with my friend Shauna who loves pizza (almost) as much as me. She is on team 'buy two pizzas and share them between two' NOT team 'buy one pizza and share between two'. No one wants to be on that team.

After ordering a bottle of Prosecco (obvs) we browsed the menu and after much deliberation went for the Cotta Ham with chorizo and salami and controversially the Baby Octopus which involved squid, tiger prawns and lemon.

I say controversially because I never normally go for seafood on pizza. And after having this one, I'm not really sure why not.

It was DELICIOUS. Really fresh ingredients and very tasty. The Cotta Ham was also good - as was the token salad we ordered to make us feel healthy. They really were exceptional stone baked pizzas.

I left very happy indeed that I had a new have pizza place less than a 15-minute walk away.

Oh AND they deliver to Victoria Park! There staff cycle round the park on a specially designed deli bike taking orders… This is something I'll definitely be taking advantage of. You know how I feel about eating pizza al fresco…

Pizza, Pals, Prosecco = Perfect

9.8.13

My favourite thing in the world to do is eating alfresco, with friends, drinking Prosecco and eating pizza.

Last Sunday my friend Alex invited us to her private little garden by her house in Borough which you needed a key to enter. VERY The Secret Garden…

Alex, Shauna, Kate and I spent the day reading magazines, chatting and eating crisps and houmous. Amazing.

But then the day got more perfect.

Alex suggested ordering pizza from Pizza Lupa, a pizza chain with two restaurants and a delivery service only in the London Bridge area.

I had never heard of them, but how I don’t know. I love pizza. Everyone knows I love pizza. And this pizza is award winning for God’s sake!

We decided to eat it in the garden as the sun was still warm. I love eating al fresco and will do it whenever I get the chance. Eating award winning pizza al fresco however was a new one on me…

Alex was adamant that we had to order the Funghi di Bosco – tomatao and mozerella base with truffle paste, roasted field and porcini mushrooms, taleggio cheese finished off with a drizzle of truffle oil. It sounded incredible so I certainly wasn’t going to argue with her.

We also order the Diavola – hot pepperoni and fresh chillies – the Parma – porcini mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, finished with Parma ham, wild rocket and Parmesan cheese and the Venicio – tomato, mozzarella and green pesto base, roasted chicken breast, goat’s cheese, caramelised onions and basil oil.

Sounds amazing? It was.

We put in our order and less than 45 minutes later the delivery man arrived at the gate. To say we were excited would be an understatement.

The boxes were HUGE and the smell was amazing. All the pizzas were done half and half and we had some homemade coleslaw to have with them.

The pizza slice was possibly the biggest I’ve ever had. It was definitely bigger than my head!

The ingredients on them all were so fresh and rich tasting without being too full on. It put every take-away pizza I’ve had to shame.

My favourite was without a doubt the Diavola as I love spice and the Funghi do Bosco. The truffle oil really made it  – good work Alex on recommending.

The pizzas were all eaten very quickly and washed down with lots of Prosecco. Could a Sunday evening get any better? I don’t think so.

So, if you live in London I urge you to check out Lupa ASAP. You will not regret it. I’m reaching for the menu to order more as I type…

Fratelli La Bufala - Pizza makes you beautiful

13.5.13

Pizza and Prosecco are magic words to me so when I was invited to the opening of the second Fratelli La Bufala restaurant in London I was there, appetite at the ready.

All I knew about the restaurant was it was founded by three brothers from Campania, their buffalo mozzarella was especially flown in from Naples three times a week - and the Neapolitan pizza was top ranked as the best pizza in London. Music to my ears.

Expectations were high - and I wasn't disappointed. (Warning: this will be a very picture heavy post. Because a picture says a thousand words, right? Drool away.)

The Prosecco flowed and the canapés kept on coming - the bruschetta being possibly the best I've ever tasted. It was so fresh. And I can confirm the Neapolitan pizza lived up to its reputation! And we also had a foodie chat with the very famous chef Aldo Zilli!

Full of delicious canapés we headed downstairs for yet more food. We tasted the famous buffalo mozzarella and it was delicious. You can understand why they fly it in - it certainly wasn't as rubbery as the mozzarella I've tried in other Italian restaurants. The pasta dish was also good.

The came the meat. The buffalo meat. WOW. It's not often I would go to an Italian and order anything other than the pizza - but I would make an exception for this. It was cooked so well it melted in your mouth. Perfect.

'It's the best thing I've ever tasted!' my friend Elaine said. I couldn't have agreed more.

Over dinner I heard someone say: 'Pizza makes you beautiful' and I couldn't agree more. I was annoyed that I hadn't thought to title my blog that!

I left happy, tipsy, so full I could barely do my coat up and certain I would be back very soon.

Fire & Stone - Best Pizza in Town

12.3.13

I love pizza. Like REALLY love pizza. And two years ago I stumbled upon a pizza gem that has become a firm favourite.

Fire & Stone is tucked away within Spitalfields market, surrounded by other chain restaurants. It's easy to forget F&S are a chain and I often do mainly because they have two things that most chains don't - good service and excellent, fresh food.

One night after work my friend Elaine and I headed to Fire & Stone. Elaine hadn't been in a while and I never take much persuading to go for a visit.

We were greeted by a super friendly waitress who gave us a lovely table in the window so we were able to see all the stall-holders packing up and the general hustle and bustle of the market.

We ordered a bottle of white wine and to start a vegetarian sharing board which included crispy butternut ravioli, fried zucchini sticks, parmesan flatbread strips, rocket, mozzarella and tomato salad, houmous, tomato salsa and olives (£9.95). As if that wasn't enough we also ordered a calamari - my favourite starter at F&S (£5.95).

It was all YUM especially the fried zucchini sticks.

Next up - the main course. Choosing a pizza at F&S is never easy. With so many unique flavours to choose from, and all sounding delicious, it's hard to decide which ones to go for. For me though it has to be the Sans Sebastian - chorizo, mozzarella, roast garlic and rosemary potatoes, roasted red peppers topped with garlic mayo (£9.95).

Don't turn your nose up at potatoes on a pizza. Trust me, it works. Double carb heaven! My housemate always says F&S pizzas are like having a meal on top of a pizza. She isn't wrong and it's not necessarily a bad thing. That's why I love F&S so much!

As always the pizza was delicious. The flavours really work together and you can tell the ingredients are all fresh.
After pizza and the huge starter we were full. Really full. So I'm not sure why but we found ourselves ordering dessert - dough strips and Nutella dip. How could we resist?

They arrived warm, the Nutella gooey. Heaven. But it did defeat us though. One more dough stick and I was about to fall into a carb coma…
You won't find a pizza place anywhere in London that does such unique toppings, has amazing service and is great value for money.  If you haven't been already you really must get down there.
As Elaine and I walked back to Liverpool Street station, we went past a well known, popular pizza chain with a queue snaking out the door.

I shook my head.

Do they not know what is minutes round the corner? I thought.

Obviously not. And more fool them.
